The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) fined Worldcoin 1.1 billion Korean won ($850,000) for illegally gathering iris scans from nearly 30,000 people in South Korea.
Worldcoin was offering cryptocurrency in exchange for users' iris data without proper consent.
Users were not given clear information about how their data would be used or stored, and the data was sent overseas without informing the individuals.
Worldcoin claimed to use the iris data for preventing duplicate registrations, but the commission found it to be a violation of privacy laws.
