Abu Dhabi's Masdar City has broken ground on the world’s first net-zero energy mosque, designed by Arup and developed by Aldar.
The mosque integrates passive cooling systems, rammed earth walls, and hydrogen-based steel to achieve a net-zero energy profile and targets LEED Zero Carbon certification.
Its circular design accommodates over 1,300 worshippers, incorporates passive airflow strategies, solar panels for energy generation, and greywater recycling for water conservation.
The project pays homage to historic earth mosques in the UAE, using rammed earth construction and low-carbon materials, becoming a regional milestone in material innovation.
