Zen Flute Mouth Theremin, a unique instrument, won at the 2023 Guthman Musical Instrument Contest hosted by Georgia Tech.
The Zen Flute uses a forced Helmholtz resonator system built with a microphone and speaker setup, controlled by the user's mouth movements to drive a MIDI controller.
It leverages MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) for smooth pitch transitions and nuanced control, offering expressive character without quantization issues.
Physically, the Zen Flute combines a speaker, microphone, custom PCB with Teensy 4.1, and PVC pipe to create a versatile mouth-controlled instrument with different instrument profiles.
