Researchers at University Putra Malaysia, in collaboration with UNSW Sydney, have developed an AI system powered by a gaming GPU, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090, that can classify Chinese ceramics and predict their value accurately.
The AI system analyzes decorative motifs, shapes, and kiln-specific craftsmanship of Chinese ceramics using deep learning technology, achieving test accuracy as high as 99% based on real auction data.
The system also annotates images of Chinese ceramics based on intricate patterns, organizing them into major categories, such as plant patterns, animal motifs, landscapes, human figures, crackled glaze patterns, and geometric designs.
The project aims to make cultural appraisal more objective, scalable, and accessible, especially for younger collectors, smaller institutions, and digital archive projects, introducing new perspectives in the valuation of heritage artifacts.
