A guide to AI prototyping for product managers
- AI prototyping can revolutionize the way product managers build products, come up with new ideas, and operate.
- Current AI development tools come in three types: chatbots (e.g. Claude, ChatGPT), cloud development environments (e.g. Replit, Bolt, v0, Lovable), and local developer assistants (e.g. GitHub Copliot, Cursor, Windsurf, Zed).
- Chatbots are capable of writing code in response to a question or prompt, best for prototypes that are just one page and don’t have complex design requirements.
- In comparison, cloud development environments require more complex designs and are one step up from chatbots. v0 is capable of writing and hosting both client and server code, Bolt can generate and deploy both client and server code, and Replit allows you to build full-stack applications, including a client, server, and database.
- Local developer assistants are targeted towards people who know how to write code, and they can generate and apply code changes based on prompts. GitHub Copilot is more popular in enterprise environments, and Cursor excels at resolving bugs and troubleshooting issues.
- Building prototypes can be done in two ways: Converting an existing design to a functional prototype and building an idea into a prototype from scratch.
- A comprehensive customer relationship management (CRM) system or 2-D tank game, can be created in less than five minutes, leading to a speedy discovery process by getting interactive examples in customer’s hands as early as possible.
- AI prototyping allows more complex applications to be built than chatbots with the ability to deploy to the cloud and easily share updated iterations over time, changing the speed at which teams can ship.
