European Space Agency (ESA) sends a 'mock' signal from Mars using the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter as part of the 'A Sign in Space' project.
The encoded message was flashed on May 24 and aims to prepare a response in the event of a signal from an extraterrestrial civilization.
The public and experts worldwide are invited to decode and interpret the message, with contributions to be shared on the project's website and social media.
The ESA spacecraft has been orbiting Mars since 2016, searching for evidence of biological or geological activity on the Red Planet.
