Apple is shifting from its traditional numerical operating system naming system to a year-based naming system, starting with iOS 26 instead of iOS 19.
The new naming approach will also apply to other Apple software like iPad OS, macOS, tvOS, watch OS, and vision OS, all transitioning to the '26' nomenclature for their upcoming versions.
The goal of this change is to simplify tracking updates by linking OS version numbers to the calendar year, providing users with clearer indications of the release year.
Alongside the new naming strategy, Apple is planning a significant visual redesign inspired by visionOS, aiming to create a more uniform user experience across all Apple devices, with a preview expected at WWDC 2025.
