A recent study conducted by waterfilterguru.com revealed that reusable water bottles carry 40,000 times more bacteria than an average toilet seat.
The study examined four popular types of water bottles and found two major types of bacteria, gram-negative rods and bacillus, inside them, which can cause serious infections and gastrointestinal issues.
On average, the bottles harboured as much as 20.8 million CFUs of gram-negative bacteria, with spout and screw-top lid bottles being the most infected with 30 million CFUs.
To avoid drinking contaminated water, it is recommended to wash the bottles with soapy water at least once a day and sanitize them at least once a week.
