XPANCEO smart contact lenses hands-on: AR prototypes from the future

  • XPANCEO, a Dubai-based company that creates smart contact lenses, showcased its futuristic prototypes at AWE. A hard plastic lens that featured a holographic display was displayed that utilises an external light source in the handle of the demo device. The lens had low clarity compared to similar products, such as Mojo Vision's similar product. The field of view (FOV) was also quite limited at just 30 degrees. XPANCEO is experimenting with creating different prototypes to understand which is the best way to fulfil their vision. XPANCEO claims to release the fully functional smart contact lens prototype by the end of 2026.
  • XPANCEO highlighted many prototypes, including the “Smart Contact Lens for Data Reading” that was an example of wireless data transmission capabilities integrated into the lens. The “Contact Lens with Intraocular Pressure (IOP) Sensor” that features a small square sensor for intraocular pressure, installed directly onto the eye which can constantly monitor IOP with great accuracy. If the data is collected by a smartphone, it could be used to detect health issues before it's too late. The lens was not a hard lens but a soft hydrogel one.
  • XPANCEO is testing different approaches for displaying information on the lenses, holographic displays, and microdisplays. These products have incredible power consumption, measuring just 1-3 microwatts. The company is close to releasing its fully functional smart contact lenses. XPANCEO's soft hydrogel lens offers an edge over Mojo Vision, which only operates on hard scleral lenses.
  • The XPANCEO AR lens had an FOV limited to around 10-20 degrees, far lower than the company’s press release claims. The “Smart Contact Lens with Transparent Electronics” was another hard lens, featuring transparent electronic components and a one-pixel display. The “Smart Contact Lens for Data Reading” demonstrated the wireless data transmission capabilities integrated into the lens and an NFC technology that is responsive to your phone.
  • There is still plenty of work to accomplish before smart contact lenses are commercially available, but XPANCEO's prototypes give such a dream real tangibility by highlighting its capability to create technology-driven smart lenses.
