The XR Week Peek (2024.12.23): Meta prepares to face the competition, Niantic works on Spatial Intelligence, and more!

  • Meta released a reflection of its positive year for 2024 and prepares for competition in 2025 with Apple and Google. Meta has launched the Quest 3S, and it has been selling well over the Black Friday weekend. This has caused young people, new-to-Quest, to gravitate towards social and co-op multiplayer games, and free-to-play content, driving new hits.
  • Meta acknowledges that there are many kids playing on Quest now, and they are shifting the economy of the store. Users want apps in social gaming, entertainment, free-to-play, core gaming, and MR-first and are becoming more and more popular. Facebook increased its attention to the successful genres and is funding developers to build a range of apps that users want.
  • AI and XR are the best match, with researchers experimenting in using an AI system to better understand a specific location. Niantic and New York University are working in this field, and it is becoming an important trend in the future of XR.
  • Blackmagic Design has opened preorders for its new URSA Cine Immersive camera, especially designed to shoot 8K VR180 footage for the Apple Immersive Video format. The camera features a pair of 180° stereo lenses capturing 59MP frames at 90 FPS.
  • Meta has added to its SDK a new feature that lets you animate the face of an avatar using audio of the voice. It is provided to all developers for free inside the Meta SDK.
  • A guy claims to have found a solution to the stuttering problems Quest was experiencing when connected via link to PC when using SteamVR. It seems the problem is the Motion-smooth, and if you disable it, the performance becomes much better.
  • The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has released a point cloud free that can be used for various purposes, such as training some AI for spatial understanding, developing a digital twin of a city and using it as a location for your game etc.
  • Meta acknowledges the competition with Apple now in the market and Google (with Samsung) officially launching next year, Meta is starting to feel the heat of competition. This competition is going to be great for users and developers.
  • Upload VR has chosen the Best VR Game of 2024. Also, the end of the year is the ideal time to assign some awards. The site has even divided and awarded the best games by categories.
  • Reality is often disappointing and the monkeys on Gorilla Tag can’t play. It seems an individual could solve the stuttering problem of Quest on Steam VR. Check out the link to donate to the Red Cross in Ukraine. Tis the season to be giving.
