A clinical research study led by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has found a way to objectively measure and effectively treat pain in cancer patients without opioids.
The study combines brain imaging using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and virtual reality (VR) technology to provide pain relief.
Participants in the study wore fNIRS head caps to measure changes in brain activity and used VR headsets to explore realistic underwater scenes.
Over 75% of pain-afflicted cancer patients who used the VR program reported a noticeable decrease in pain, indicating a potential breakthrough in pain management for cancer patients.
