Building consistency: Why it matters

  • Consistency is important because it makes us feel safe and confident in our actions, building trust in relationships, and we tend to favour those with reliable behaviours.
  • Resistance to consistency is often met, particularly from executive teams, as it is hard to quantify and measure, so we equate it with intensity.
  • To build consistency, we need to think about it differently and concentrate on creating the processes and routines that lead to results rather than focusing solely on goals.
  • Consistency is a habit; just like a habit, it takes time to establish and see the results.
  • We can measure consistency by running a standup or a retro, taking feedback during these meetings and drawing conclusions based on the descriptive and related language used.
  • We can also run an internal satisfaction survey, as we would when trying to understand better how external users perceive our product, to measure consistency.
  • Resistance to consistency comes from trying to change something hard to measure and change behaviour, and we tend to default to previous decisions that worked well when faced with a problem.
  • By making consistency more of an emotional conversation than a practical one, it can become a little more exciting.
  • Remember, consistency doesn't happen overnight. It takes time to build and maintain consistency.
  • With clear processes and routines that lead to results (systems) in place, it is possible to build and maintain consistency.
