Immersive virtual reality technology has shown effectiveness in reducing pain and distress for patients undergoing medical procedures.
Research at Bruyère Health in Ottawa found that complex care patients reported decreased pain intensity, less pain unpleasantness, and decreased focus on pain while using immersive VR.
Patients in chronic pain experienced an average decrease of 3.6 out of 10 in pain intensity during wound dressing changes, and 3.1 out of 10 for chronic pain with immersive VR.
Despite challenges in adapting the technology for complex care environments, the research showed promising results in providing compassionate and innovative care for patients.
