Digital Wallets and Air Travel Push U.S. Mobile IDs to 143M by 2030

  • This growth is driven by the REAL ID-compliant requirement for domestic air travel, third-party digital wallet providers offering their mDLs for free, and the adoption of the EU model by creating an all-encompassing government credential digital wallet.
  • ABI Research forecasts that by the end of 2030, 40 U.S. states will have implemented mobile driver’s licenses independently or through third-party digital wallet providers, with mDLs being integrated as alternatives to physical licenses for law enforcement and age verification purposes.
  • In Europe, the European Union has approved the eIDAS 2.0 regulation, requiring each member state to offer a European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) by 2026, which can include mDLs, health records, diplomas, and more.
