Texas-based Envoy Air is the first U.S. airline to receive FAA approval to incorporate VR software into its pilot training programs.
Envoy Air is using VR headsets and joysticks for pilots to practice various aspects of their job without being near an actual aircraft, alongside other training tools like flight simulators.
The VR training program helps pilots gain proficiency in a shorter time, with positive feedback from both junior and senior aviators.
Envoy is training its instructors on the VR software before classes of 24 trainees each begin using the mixed-reality program for aircraft preflight checks, flight deck procedures, and more, with potential future applications being explored.
