GM and LG Energy Solution have introduced a new type of battery cell, LMR, which aims to offer long range and low cost for EVs.
The LMR cells are expected to have up to 30% more energy density than current cells and could reduce China's dominance in the low-cost EV battery market.
GM plans to use LMR cells in future electric trucks and SUVs, alongside other battery chemistries like NMCA and LFP for different types of EVs.
The use of LMR cells in prismatic form is expected to reduce total system costs in large EVs by 50%, with GM aiming to start production in the US in 2028.
