General Motors and LG Energy Solution have developed a new lithium manganese rich (LMR) battery chemistry for electric trucks, promising extended driving range and lower cost.
The LMR batteries are set to debut on GM's models in 2028, offering more than 400 miles of range and an energy density 33% higher than lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries.
GM's LMR cathode chemistry combines the advantages of both NMC and LFP chemistries, providing packaging advantages with prismatic cells and potentially cutting down on weight by hundreds of pounds.
GM has invested in manganese supplier Element 25 and expects to process materials in the U.S., aiming to bring the game-changing LMR battery technology to market for electric trucks.
