Google has confirmed it will be taking the development of Android entirely in-house, which is a significant change for the open-source mobile operating system.
Key components of Android that were previously developed in public on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) branch will now be developed on Google's internal branch.
This change is aimed at streamlining development by eliminating the need for Google to merge the AOSP and internal branches for each final release.
The shift has raised concerns about technological fragmentation and the development of competing operating systems, such as Huawei's HarmonyOS.
