Google Pixel 8a vs. Pixel 7a: Do you really need to upgrade?
- The new Google Pixel 8a has officially replaced the Google Pixel 7a, which was launched in 2023.
- The Pixel 8a brings several upgrades on the display and performance front, making it stand out in the budget smartphone category.
- The Pixel 8a features a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness, compared to the 90Hz refresh rate and 1,000 nits peak brightness of the Pixel 7a.
- The Pixel 8a has an upgraded Google Tensor G3 chip with Google’s Titan M2 security coprocessor, which offers a 22% increase in CPU speeds and 25% higher memory bandwidth than the Tensor G2 on the Pixel 7a.
- The Pixel 8a still uses the same camera setup as the Pixel 7a, but includes new camera features like Best Take and Magic Editor.
- The Pixel 8a comes with Android 14 and provides seven years of software support across the board, compared to the Pixel 7a's Android 13 and three years of OS upgrades and five years of security and Feature Drop updates.
- The Pixel 8a is available with two storage options - 128GB and 256GB, for $499 and $559, respectively.
- If you already have a Pixel 7a, it is recommended to keep using it unless it is causing issues. The Pixel 8a is a tempting upgrade for those experiencing a lot of bugs with the Pixel 7a.
- However, for most people, the Pixel 8a is a better upgrade option, offering an improved chipset, display, a slightly more durable design, and more software support.
