A hacker stole Insider senior reporter Avery Hartmans' phone number and identity while she was on vacation in New York.The hacker used a SIM swap to gain control of Hartmans' phone number and proceeded to rack up $10,000 on her credit card.The identity theft was made possible due to the negligence of companies and officials who were supposed to prevent it.The SIM swap did not require the hacker to physically steal Hartmans' SIM card.
