How Songbird Aims For Approachable VR Karaoke On Quest

  • Songbird, developed by Always Blue Games, swaps USB microphones for the Quest’s integrated microphone for VR karaoke gaming and offers 33 songs at launch. The game allows for no-fail sing-along, with every song unlocked from the start. Marcus Henderson, founder and the creative director of Songbird, has been interested in VR since childhood and believes we are only scratching the surface of what’s to come for VR gaming.
  • The game is designed to be accessible to a wide audience and to provide a fun experience rather than generate sales. Henderson believes music games are often used for therapy or to serve as competitive cudgels that test skills against others. He sees VR gaming as having vast potential as it can enable people to ‘feel’ what they would not otherwise experience.
  • Henderson says Songbird’s design choices make for a forgiving gameplay experience that is a little looser and aligned with the team’s goal of keeping the game accessible and easy to play. The intention is to offer an experience beyond staring at a lyrics board. The team aims to convey a welcoming environment through the use of bright, warm colours and a world filled with critters as your audience.
  • Multiplayer options are in the future plans of the game if they can find the intended audience, and monthly song packs and expanding artist packs are on the horizon of future updates to provide new in-game experiences. The team is interested in building a community as they continue to make quality of life improvements.
  • Songbird is currently priced at $24.99 and is available on the Meta Quest platform. The development team at Always Blue Games has a background in music and believes VR games are only scratching the surface of what’s to come. They are committed to pushing the boundaries of VR gaming, creating new experiences and revising old mechanics to unlock new potential areas for gaming innovation.
