How to copy iPhone photos and videos to an external drive or SSD

  • To transfer photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad to an external drive, ensure your external storage is formatted properly and requires no more than 4.5 watts of power for compatibility.
  • If using iCloud Photos, make sure to download the full-quality images and videos to your device as default storage is of smaller optimized versions.
  • Transfer involves using Apple's Files app in conjunction with the Photos app for iPhone or iPad as external storage devices do not show up in the Photos app.
  • You can select desired photos and videos in the Photos app, tap the share button, choose Save to Files, and then save them to a new folder in the Files app.
  • Connect your external drive to the device, locate the saved files in the Files app, select them, and copy them over to the external drive for backup.
  • Alternatively, third-party apps like Copy That can be used to directly transfer images and videos from the iOS Photos app to the connected storage device.
  • Download the Copy That app, select the destination as your external storage, choose the files to copy, and initiate the transfer within the app.
  • Another method is transferring iPhone photos to a Mac or Windows PC first and then moving them to an external drive from there.
  • If utilizing iCloud Photos or Google Photos, download the entire library to your computer and then transfer the media to an external storage drive using the respective system's file management tools.
