Indium Corporation and Rio Tinto have successfully extracted gallium from feed sourced at Rio Tinto’s Vaudreuil alumina refinery in Saguenay, Quebec, Canada.
The companies aim to provide a strategic North American supply of gallium, crucial for EVs, semiconductors, smartphones, and other high-tech applications.
Indium developed the gallium extraction process in the US and plans to scale up production with a 3.5-ton demonstration plant in Saguenay, Quebec, eventually reaching a commercial-scale capacity of 40 tons annually.
According to Ross Berntson, President and CEO of Indium, this collaboration marks a significant progress in creating a new supply of gallium to benefit global industries.
