A new study challenges the conventional wisdom that hailstones form through repeated trips up and down through a storm.Researchers found that most hailstones grew without any reversal in direction, with only a small number experiencing multiple cycles.Hailstones larger than 25mm in diameter were observed to have at least one period of growth during lifting. While smaller hailstones may not cycle in a storm, the largest hailstones typically climb at least once before descending.
