iPhone 16 Pro review: Apple levels up its smaller ‘pro’ phone

  • Apple has added a 5x zoom camera from the Pro Max line to its iPhone 16 Pro, upgrading its smaller ‘pro’ phone and making it an instant contender for the best small-sized smartphone. The 16 Pro has the same price tag as its predecessor and costs £999 (€1,199/$999/A$1,799), positioning it between the 16 Pro Max priced at £1,199 and the iPhone 16, which starts at £799. The slick and crisp 6.3in display is one of the best available on the market, although the peak brightness doesn’t match that of rivals.
  • The 16 Pro runs iOS 18 and has seen a lot of customization features added for the home screen, control centre, updates to the Photos, Notes and Maps apps, a new password manager, and RCS support for the messages app. Despite Apple’s high-profile AI features, the much-publicised Siri and other various AI writing tools are yet to be released.
  • The 16 Pro’s new chip is around 10-15% faster and 20% more efficient and will remain fast in the coming years. The 16 Pro is smaller and easier to hold than most flagship smartphones and fits easily in one’s pocket. The battery lasts around 38 to 40 hours between charges with a mix of 5G and wifi.
  • The phone has more than 25% recycled material, including aluminium, cobalt, copper, gold, lithium, plastic, rare earth elements, steel, tin, and tungsten. The 16 Pro features repair guides and was awarded a score of 7/10 for repairability by iFixit. The battery should last for excess of 1,000 full-charge cycles, with at least 80% of its original capacity, and can be replaced for £109.
  • Apple has updated the iPhone 16 Pro’s camera to feature the same 5x optical zoom and ultrawide 48MP camera as the Pro Max line, a dedicated camera control button, and its photographic styles feature has been improved and creative editing can be done using a virtual D-pad.
  • The 16 Pro strikes the optimal balance in terms of size and capability with top-tier features compressed into a small frame. It has a good screen, excellent cameras with 5x optical zoom, USB-C, action, and camera control buttons and good battery life. The 16 Pro is an expensive phone, and its camera control may be a little tricky for some users. It looks similar to its predecessors.
