Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, has introduced a new chat app called BitChat that allows messaging without the need for the internet.
BitChat utilizes a 'Bluetooth mesh network' to transmit encrypted messages between phones, operating up to 300 meters away without requiring mobile data, Wi-Fi, or phone numbers.
The app aims to bypass censorship by enabling communication even when internet access is unavailable; it prioritizes privacy by not collecting identifiable information and features group chats and message alerts.
Currently in testing with around 10,000 iPhone users, BitChat could potentially revolutionize communication methods once fully launched.
