Drew Doman is VP of Product at Apptegy, which helps K–12 leaders build a strong digital brand by providing communication tools for website and mobile app creation and a two-way communication platform to connect to the community, enabling teachers to communicate directly with students’ parents and guardians.
Drew talks about leveraging tenets in product management rather than strictly relying on processes, and importance of being data-driven rather than data-dependent,
Apptegy provides different communication tools for a variety of applications and also offers a live feed on most of the websites they build that shows the most important updates for the community.
Drew believes that the job of a really successful manager is creating the conditions for the team to do the best work of their careers.
Drew's philosophy is to rely more heavily on tenets than processes, stating that tenets give product managers frameworks to use when maybe a process does not exist or when they do not want to over-design one.
One tenet Apptegy has been rolling out across the team is being data-driven, but not data-dependent. Drew believes that there is an aspect to product management that is lost when you only emphasize data-driven decisions. Of course, data must be used, but not at the expense of product instincts.
When it comes to prioritization, Drew believes it is essential to understand magnitude, so the team can determine how to allocate resources to address some of the problems.
The Apptegy product team meets every two weeks to discuss all the feedback they have heard and determine priorities. The team also discusses both qualitative and quantitative data in one meeting.
Drew encourages product managers to see the products in action and become users and one of the best sources of feedback.
