North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein, a Democrat in a Republican-led state, vetoed multiple controversial bills targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts as well as restricting LGBTQ and transgender rights.
Stein criticized the bills as 'mean-spirited' and stated they would marginalize vulnerable people and undermine public services and education quality.
The bills sought to eliminate DEI efforts in public schools and government agencies, with restrictions on DEI practices, curriculum, and discussions in higher education.
Additionally, Stein vetoed immigration bills that aimed to tighten state and local enforcement of illegal immigration, citing concerns about straining law enforcement resources and potential constitutional violations.
