Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, must face trial in a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) lawsuit over concerns about antitrust issues related to its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.
Judge James Boasberg in Washington denied Meta's motion to dismiss the case but dismissed one of the allegations made against it regarding hampering third-party developers' access to its platform.
The FTC alleged that Meta acted illegally to maintain its social network monopoly, while Meta argued that the acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp have been beneficial for competition and consumers.
Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, and both purchases were initially cleared of antitrust issues. However, in 2020, Meta's Facebook faced antitrust lawsuits from the FTC and a coalition of attorneys general from 48 states and territories.
