Meta-owned Downpour Interactive's tactical mil-sim shooter, Onward, received a major 2.0 update in March with improved visuals and new content.
Following the update, Downpour Interactive announced that Meta is shutting down the studio, halting development and moving employees to sister studio Camouflaj.
Update 2.0 is the last content for Onward, and the game will no longer receive support for new content or non-critical bug fixes.
Onward will not have a dedicated support team, with players advised to contact platform holders or use the Onward Discord and subreddit for bug-related issues.
Developers from Downpour Interactive have been transferred to Meta's sister studio Camouflaj, known for games like Iron Man VR and Batman: Arkham Shadow.
Onward gained popularity in 2016 with its early access release on PC VR headsets and was later ported to the original Oculus Quest in 2020.
Meta's acquisition of Downpour Interactive aimed to enhance Onward's multiplayer VR experience with improved visuals, lighting, and AI behavior.
Meta has acquired several VR studios including Beat Games, Sanzaru Games, Ready at Dawn, BigBox VR, Within, Twisted Pixel, and Camouflaj between 2019 and 2022.
Despite these acquisitions, Meta conducted layoffs affecting over 10,000 employees in 2023, including a portion of the staff at Ready at Dawn and Downpour Interactive.
Studio founder Dante Buckley left Downpour Interactive in 2023, a month before the layoffs.
