Microsoft is updating SymCrypt, its core cryptographic library, with new quantum-secure algorithms. The first new algorithm added is ML-KEM, also known as CRYSTALS-Kyber, which is a post-quantum standard formalized by NIST.ML-KEM, based on Module Learning with Errors, offers guaranteed security and varying parameter sets for different security strengths. The second algorithm added is XMSS, based on stateful hash-based signature schemes and recommended by NIST.
