NASA scientists have solved the mystery of why Jupiter's moon Io is volcanically active.
Io, slightly larger than our moon, has about 400 volcanoes and plumes from eruptions can be seen from Earth.
Data collected by NASA's Juno spacecraft during flybys of Io revealed that the moon's volcanism is fueled by its tidal flexing caused by gravitational forces from Jupiter.
The research findings have implications for understanding planetary formation and evolution.
