NASA scientists and engineers tested the Compact Fire Infrared Radiance Spectral Tracker (c-FIRST) during flights over the California wildfires in January 2025.
c-FIRST, managed and operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, gathers thermal infrared images and data to study the impacts of wildfires on ecosystems.
With the ability to capture the full temperature range across a wide area, c-FIRST provides more accurate understanding of fire behavior and crucial characteristics such as size and temperature.
The data collected by c-FIRST can be used to estimate the likelihood of fire spread, aid firefighting agencies, and understand the recovery of ecosystems from fire events.
