NASA Uses New Technology to Understand California Wildfires

  • NASA scientists and engineers tested the Compact Fire Infrared Radiance Spectral Tracker (c-FIRST) during flights over the California wildfires in January 2025.
  • c-FIRST, managed and operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, gathers thermal infrared images and data to study the impacts of wildfires on ecosystems.
  • With the ability to capture the full temperature range across a wide area, c-FIRST provides more accurate understanding of fire behavior and crucial characteristics such as size and temperature.
  • The data collected by c-FIRST can be used to estimate the likelihood of fire spread, aid firefighting agencies, and understand the recovery of ecosystems from fire events.
