NASA's SPHEREx telescope 'opens its eyes on the universe', taking stunning debut image of 100,000 galaxies and stars

  • A new NASA space telescope, SPHEREx, has captured its first light by taking stunning images of tens of thousands of galaxies and stars.
  • The telescope, enclosed with three different detectors, has collected six images, each covering an area 20 times wider than the full moon.
  • SPHEREx will scan the entire night sky four times and collect data from more than 450 million galaxies, giving scientists key insights into cosmology and the evolution of galaxies.
  • The wide panorama viewing of SPHEREx will complement the James Webb Space Telescope by identifying regions of interest for further study.
