Scientists have named a new fish species for the character San (also called Princess Mononoke) in the animated movie Princess Mononoke, thanks to their similarly painted cheeks.
The new fish species was discovered in a seafood market in China and identified as a type of deepwater tilefish belonging to the Branchiostegidae family.
The fish has distinctive red and white stripes on its cheeks, resembling the makeup worn by the character San, leading to its name Branchiostegus sanae.
San is a beloved character in Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke, known for her role as a protector of the forest and defender of nature.
