Norway plans to introduce a 3% tourist tax in select destinations starting summer 2026 to preserve the environment and ease pressure on local infrastructure.
The tax will be imposed on overnight stays at hotels and short-term rentals, including Airbnb, with cruise passengers also being subject to the fee.
Municipalities can opt to implement the tax if tourism strains public facilities, and the revenue will be used for services like trail maintenance and waste management.
The industry welcomes this approach as a targeted measure to address tourism impacts, with a review of the legislation planned after three years.
