A national survey commissioned by the children’s commissioner, Rachel de Souza, reveals that 99.8% of primary schools and 90% of secondary schools in England enforce some form of mobile phone restriction.
Some schools require students to hand in their phones, while others ban their use or display but allow students to keep them. A small percentage of secondary schools have a complete ban on student phone possession.
The National Education Union (NEU) supports a legal ban on mobile phones in schools, as well as a complete social media ban for under-16s, citing mental health concerns.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson welcomes the survey results and supports the approach of backing headteachers to implement phone bans in their schools.
