How Reddit went from a weird corner of the web to everyone's favorite digital hangout

  • Reddit has emerged as a more mainstream and acceptable alternative to Twitter, the leading forum for discourse.
  • Increasing numbers of people browse Reddit to find reliable reviews and user feedback.
  • Growth is driven by new, casual browsers, with daily active users logged into their accounts up by 27%, but by 70% for people logged out.
  • Reddit is becoming more trusted as a source of reliable information, and even the White House is using it to combat misinformation.
  • Reddit went public earlier this year at a $6.4 billion valuation after a few years cleaning up its act.
  • Its most recent earnings report showed that revenue and cash from ads rose, and last quarter, Reddit turned a profit for the first time in its history.
  • The search platform, Google, is prioritizing Reddit's search results, which boosts visitor traffic but presents a risky proposition.
  • AI and data licensing are being used to reach a broader and international audience.
  • There are concerns that Reddit's growth may lead to its rapid corporatization, which could put the value of its brand and legitimacy at risk.
  • Reddit is emerging as a more hybrid platform, somewhere between social media and a widely respected database of information from real users.

The Reddit Paradox: How AI is Driving Users Back to the Internet’s Most Un-AI Misfit

  • Reddit, once a misfit with scruffy language and an unappealing interface has become the benefactor and antidote to an internet suffocating under algorithmic polish.
  • Reddit's marketing is non-existent and it's ad features are barebones but it's global logged-in users have grown 27% to 44.1 million.
  • AI has helped platforms like Google bump user-generated content to the top giving Reddit prime real estate in our search results.
  • AI has also created a 'filter bubble' effect which boosts short-term engagement and dwell time but leads users to intellectual comatose.
  • Reddit is a space where users can move beyond the calculated déjà vu of other platforms and break from the algorithmic leash.
  • Other platforms are programmed to amplify high-clout users, creating a digital caste system that's rooted in social comparison theory stifling smaller users.
  • On Reddit's unapologetically anti-status platform, even the smallest voices are passed the megaphone and posts rise purely on their own merit.
  • Reddit plays guard to the genuine, where anonymity and content-first engagement free users from the aesthetic rat race.
  • Reddit provides a dopamine hit for those tired of algorithmic etiquette and is a space where curiosity isn't a liability but the entire point.
  • Reddit has become one of the last places where culture still lives, by refusing to curate culture it has redefined influence by never trying to influence users.

Massively Overthinking: How long should it take to level to endgame in MMORPGs?

  • New World players have been blasting through levels at an alarming rate. In just two days, some have gone from 0-44, with getting to level 65 taking only 15 hours.
  • For games like Lord of the Rings Online and other sandboxes, players should ideally take many months to hit max level as it’s the journey that counts.
  • For smaller-scale themeparks like New World, the ability for users to blitz through it doesn’t hurt the game.
  • Being able to speed up or slow down leveling at their leisure, something done in games such as LOTRO, would be great to implement more often.
  • MMOs let the journey take second place to endgames, devaluing the leveling, urging players to rush through zones and content.
  • MMOs need to make the journey, not the endgame, the real experience.
  • Instances like WoW Classic are preferred for providing a meaningful journey when compared to the zip-zip-now-you’re-80 retail edition.
  • There is a fine line between appreciated challenges and arbitrary slow leveling to extend it.
  • Different games call for different leveling models and there is no one size fits all solutions to leveling too quickly or too slow.
  • Non-traditional leveling models or systems where everything is relevant at all levels, such as in The Secret World or Elder Scrolls Online, allow for a faster leveling experience.
