Skype, the communications service, is shutting down today after 22 years of service, with its end being confirmed by Microsoft in February 2025.
Skype users are advised to download Microsoft Teams and login with their Skype credentials to transfer contacts over, with data available for export or deletion until January 2026.
Skype was once popular for its VoIP service, reaching the peak of its popularity in 2005 with hundreds of millions of users before being acquired by eBay for $2.5bn.
Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion, but faced a decline in users due to competition from other communication apps and unpopular redesigns, leading to today's shutdown.
