Snapchat's parent company, Snap, announced that it will launch fully standalone consumer AR glasses, called Specs, in 2026.
The Specs are described as an ultra-powerful wearable computer integrated into lightweight glasses with see-through lenses, developed with a $3 billion investment by Snap.
Snap has a history in the smart glasses space, having released non-AR camera glasses in the past. The move to AR Specs reflects Snap's focus on shipping an AR product.
The Specs are expected to have a smaller form factor, less weight, and more capabilities compared to the current development kits, running Snap OS with 'Lenses'. Snap aims to launch the first major true AR glasses without requiring a phone or bulky headset.
