iCloud backups on iPhones may take up a large amount of space, even using all the “usual” tricks creating a headache for some users.
The problem may result from Home Screen web apps being included in the backup, unlike in the iCloud Backup Settings App List, which lists other app backups, but not web apps.
Web apps are crucially part of a phone’s backup, with the author of this piece discovering that various Home Screen web apps were that which had taken up so much storage.
Using an unofficial provision backed up data to a Linux machine and studied the folders that could be taking up space to confirm that Home Screen web apps were the culprits.
The author then used the Python library iOSbackup to uncover which web apps were taking up space, in efforts to create the equivalent of Linux’s du folder examination tool.
Several web apps were discovered to be taking up huge amounts of space, including Phanpy (1.6GB), Twitter (1.2GB) and elk.zone (133.1MB), in comparison to Squoosh.app (1.1MB).
Instead of removing them entirely, the author decided to delete a few and re-add the ones required, like Twitter and Phanpy.
The bug in the iCloud Backup Settings App List needs to be fixed, as Home Screen web apps are crucial “apps” on iPhones.
While it is important to include web apps in a phone’s backup, Apple should display PWAs and other web apps on their iCloud Backup Settings App List, alerting users to well-used web apps.
The bug has been filed at feedbackassistant.apple.com, but the author has received no response to their other past reports filed there.
