Transforming Medtech with AI and Virtual Reality

  • Virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) can be game changers when it comes to getting complex high-quality products to market faster and more efficiently, said Seamus Maguire, global vice president of lean systems at Freudenberg Medical.
  • Using AI and VR can standardize the human element aspect of manufacturing, which is where a lot of the slow-down can happen.
  • Freudenberg has successfully used VR for complicated tech transfers from different countries and has developed AI to determine optimal site layouts.
  • Maguire will speak on how Freudenberg is using AI and VR to enhance operator training and optimize factory layout planning at the upcoming MD&M West session, which is taking place from Feb. 4-6, 2025, in Anaheim, CA.
  • Freudenberg used VR to improve the quality of training and build muscle memory of operators without interrupting the product flow.
  • Freudenberg used VR and a thing called a 3P process which is production, preparation, and process to create a 3D mock-up digitized version to store, share and make it easier to explore the current layout at different locations.
  • Freudenberg also developed AI trained on lean methodologies and optimized their best layouts to create something that you could put a VR headset on and walk around.
  • VR training standardizes the human element which is where a lot of the slow-down can happen and eliminates fear, therefore, allowing for operators to experiment and learn.
  • The human element is one of the biggest sources of variation in manufacturing, and VR technology allows us to remove one of the biggest sources of variation.
  • People who would be interested in the session would include business leaders of companies who want to set things up right, operations team members, engineers, and those interested in tech transfers across continents.
