The UK's first pilot of GPS-based transport ticketing will take place on Northern and East Midlands Railway services later this year.
The government aims to simplify and add flexibility to ticketing by utilizing GPS technology to track journeys and ensure passengers pay the best fare.
The trials will be conducted in partnership with Northern and East Midlands Railways and will involve a unique barcode generated in the app for ticket inspections and barrier access.
Key features of the GPS-based transport ticketing include distance-based fares, seamless travel, contactless payments, real-time tracking, and environmental benefits.
