Eric Council Jr., 26, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison and three years of supervised release for hacking the official X account of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
The hackers, including Council, falsely announced that the SEC had approved Bitcoin exchange traded funds through the hacked account, leading to a spike in the cryptocurrency's price.
Council and his co-conspirators performed a SIM swap attack to take control of a person's cellphone account, allowing them to reset the password of the SEC's X account and gain control.
The incident occurred in 2024 and resulted in a temporary surge in Bitcoin price before dropping back down.
