Verizon has requested the FCC to eliminate the rule requiring them to unlock phones after 60 days, stating that it benefits bad actors and fraudsters.
The unlocking requirement was first imposed by the FCC in 2008 following Verizon's purchase of C-Block spectrum, allowing customers to switch carriers more easily.
Verizon now wants the 60-day unlocking period extended even longer, claiming the current rule is burdensome and harmful, and argues that recent industry experience shows a longer lock period is needed to deter device fraud.
Verizon believes waiving this rule would benefit consumers by allowing the company to offer subsidies for more affordable phones and would improve competition by creating a level playing field.
