Netherlands-based company Wattlab delivers a solar energy system for HGK Shipping’s inland cargo vessel, the Blue Marlin, which features 192 solar panels for power supply to both onboard and propulsion systems.
Wattlab had previously equipped HGK Shipping's dry cargo vessel, MS Helios, with 312 solar panels, earning a Guinness World Record for the largest solar panel installation on an inland shipping vessel.
The solar energy system on the Blue Marlin differs from the Helios as it can contribute power directly to the ship's propulsion system along with low-voltage onboard systems.
The Blue Marlin's solar power system can deliver up to 35 kilowatts and works in conjunction with diesel generators for peak shaving, improving efficiency, reducing fuel consumption, and allowing potential periods of sailing using only solar power.
