An adviser to Europe’s top court, the Court of Justice of the European Union, has backed WhatsApp, the messaging app of Meta Platforms, in its appeal against a fine from the Irish Data Protection Commission.
In September 2021, the Irish DPC fined WhatsApp 225m euros for breaching privacy and data processing regulations.
The case originated from Facebook's acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014, with controversies arising over sharing user data between the two platforms.
The Court of Justice of the European Union is expected to make a final ruling on the case soon, following the adviser's non-binding opinion.
