Chinese scientists have begun drilling a 10,000-meter hole in the Earth's crust, aiming to create China's deepest borehole.
The drilling project in Xinjiang will penetrate more than 10 continental rock layers, reaching the cretaceous system dating back 145 million years.
President Xi Jinping has highlighted the importance of deep Earth exploration for identifying resources and assessing environmental risks.
The current deepest man-made hole is the Russian Kola Superdeep Borehole, reaching 12,262 meters in 1989. China's project aims to push the boundaries of deep Earth exploration.
