Women are underrepresented in the tech industry and in a recent study women only made up 27.6% of tech jobs in 2022 and the rate is even lower for Black and Hispanic women. Organizations need to create policies and programs to address the issue. Cloudera has introduced the Women Leaders in Technology Initiative to support women’s voices in leadership.
Mary Wells, Chief Marketing Officer at Cloudera and executive sponsor of the WLIT, talked about why Cloudera launched this forum and her own experience working in male-dominated industries and her advice for the next generation.
WLIT creates meaningful connections for women and allies in tech leadership through networking, collaboration, and advocacy of policies and programs that drive real change to build a stronger, more diverse workforce. WLIT aims to become a model for other organizations to embrace similar initiatives to address critical issues.
Initiatives like WLIT can lead to real business opportunities that elevate female voices and foster inclusivity, giving women confidence to push themselves further in tech leadership roles.
The first WLIT event featured a panel of women leaders from across the industry who discussed the challenges women face entering the technology sector and the advice they have for their peers and women looking to enter the field.
Mentorship has played a pivotal role in Mary’s career and helped her gain confidence to take on challenges. Her advice for women and allies aspiring to build careers in technology is to "do it afraid" and not let self-doubt hold them back.
Cloudera’s WLIT initiative aims to create an environment where everyone can thrive. It is supplemental to the important work of their internal-facing employee resource group, Women+, and is not confined to Cloudera or limited to an internal audience. It is an industry-wide initiative designed to bring together people across the tech sector, fostering a collective commitment to inclusivity and progress.
WLIT builds on Cloudera’s strong foundation of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Every executive leader sponsors initiatives designed to elevate employee voices and ensure representation.
Mary Wells is passionate about giving back, serving on boards focused on animal welfare and elder advocacy. She believes true leadership is rooted in service and strives to uphold that principle in every decision she makes.
