The FIDO Alliance has drafted a new specification to allow for the secure import and export of passkeys between password managers.
Passkeys, introduced as a password replacement in 2022, enable logging in to apps and websites using biometrics or a physical security key.
The new specification relies on the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF) for secure movement of credentials.
Apple, a FIDO Alliance member, supports passkeys and is expected to implement import and export capabilities alongside iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 in 2025.
